چکیده

Intra-Household Allocation of Resources: Inferences from Non-Resident Fathers’ Child Support Payments A large proportion of divorced and separated fathers form new partnerships. The new partner’s preferences are not likely to put much weight on expenditures on the man’s children from his previous union. Thus, his own and his partner’s income would have different impacts on his child support payments if partners’ relative incomes affect bargaining power in household decisions. This paper exploits within-father variation in the British Household Panel Survey (1991-2003) to estimate the impacts of intra-household income distribution on child support payments and the father’s welfare. We find that a higher share of father’s income in household income increases the probability of paying child support and its amount relative to household income. JEL Classification: D12, D13

In this paper we examine gender differences in the inter-generational persistence of child labor within the context of intra-household resource allocation. We begin by building an intra-household allocation model where fathers and mothers may affect the education investment and the child labor participation of their sons and daughters differently due to differences in the children's human capit...

Fathers’ Investments of Time and Money across Residential Contexts

Fathers’ roles in family life have changed dramatically over the past fifty years. High and rising divorce rates, the growing proportion of births that occur outside of marriage, and the higher likelihood of children living with their mothers when their parents’ union ends have resulted in a striking decline in the proportion of men living with their own biological children since the mid-1960s....

Child Support Reform : Some Analysis of the 1999

This paper uses a sample of lone mothers (and former lone mothers who are now repartnered) drawn from the 1997 Family Resources Survey to analyse the potential effects of reforming the UK system of Child Support. The main deficiency of the data is that non-resident fathers cannot be matched to the mothers in the data and this is overcome by exploiting information from another dataset which give...

Spillovers from Costly Credit

Recent studies of credit access among low-income households find that payday loans can exacerbate, rather than alleviate, financial distress. I find that households with payday loan access are also more likely to use food assistance benefits and less likely to make child support payments required of non-resident parents. These findings suggest that borrowers in distress turn to transfer program...

We begin by building an intra-household allocation model where fathers and mothers may affect the education investment and the child labor participation of their son...
